Recommended equipment for class:
Footwear:
Please wear indoor-only footwear with non-marking soles on the dojo mats.
For new students, grip socks work will work, but we recommend getting some dedicated martial arts shoes.
Traditionally, we wear Japanese ninja shoes called tabi. In our dojo, we prefer outdoor tabi (jika-tabi) because they have grippy rubber soles.
Here are some examples below. You can use these links (some are Amazon affiliate links), or purchase similar footwear from any other supplier you choose.

We have some students who wear barefoot-style shoes in the dojo. This is also acceptable, as long as they have only been worn indoors.
If buying a new pair, please choose shoes that do not have hard components like hard plastic toggles or metal pieces.
We also recommend shoes that are somewhat flexible and do not have hard-edged soles. This allows the students to feel and use their feet properly.
If you’re not sure if a shoe is appropriate for class, you can always ask an instructor.
